Sex-Text

1993     Sex-Text Masters of Fine Art Show San Francisco State Art Gallery, San Francisco, CA.

Constructed as a pristine white environment, Sex-Text (1993), portrays sexual activities. The ’personal’ serving as
a parallel metaphor for the ‘global’ - a mirror of the behavior of human populations. The installation was built
in cement, bronze, wood, styrofoam, and rebar. It covered an area of 224 sq. feet.
Three sculptures compose this installation.

Adam and Eve in Virtual Reality is the global entrance; a couple wearing virtual reality head sets. It is the epitome
of the idealized isolation, the natural companion of individualism.

Rape is the portrait of a gang in the act of violating a woman. Placed over a powerful small cylinder, at the core of the installation. A pedestal imprinted with the map of the world upside-down, colored in contrasting white and
bloody red earthy tones.

Hope is seen from all the angles. Placed at the the end of the installation, the 13 foot tall bodies are the portrait of
a couple on the verge of initiating a flight to the unknown. The bodies provoke the notion of the human or
sexual encounter as being a spiritualized flight.

These works are created in a time where the nature of self and sexual identity is under debate. An era in which
the market economy, through medicine and the media has found a way to colonize the last sanctuary of
our bodies and ourselves, intruding even upon our innermost fantasies.
